Giuseppe Russo’s vineyard in the contrada of Feudo in Randazzo – not to be confused with contrada Feudo di Mezzo in Castiglione, where he also owns land – is home to Alberello vines over 70 years-old at 650 metres above sea level. It ferments spontaneously, and after malo is racked into used 26hl casks for 18 months. Quite closed in its youth yet clearly very intense, it conveys a dark-fruited, super-fresh character of red and black cherry, blackberry and blueberry, with some balsamic herbs, plenty of spice and a creamy, chocolatey touch. Balletically poised and with glorious sapidity of fruit, this is in another league this year.
