Rather unusual in its evolution, Sopra Il Pozzo 2016 starts out smoky and animal, developing more delicate aromas of cinnamon, clove and potpourri as it breathes. The palate is rather compact in this phase – grainy tannins and bright acidity take centre stage, camouflaging the midweight core of crunchy red fruits and conveying an impression of pleasant dustiness. Smoke and bitter orange linger on a savoury, quintessentially volcanic finish. Currently austere, it may blossom with further cellaring.
