Vinupetra is an Etna Rosso from 70- to 80-year-old vines planted at 10,000 vines per hectare on the northern flank of the volcano at 500 metres above sea level. Here, Salvo Foti handles the Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Grenache grapes with delicacy. They are fermented with indigenous yeasts in French second-fill barriques and tonneaux. Vinupetra 2016 shows a depth of game, leather, balsamic resin and youthful blood orange. The attack is full of sucrosity and density, with almost-creamy tannins, lifted yet super-high acidity, and a polished toasty finish. An outstanding, soulful wine from Sicily.
