The vineyards of the Cantine La Contea lie in the Santa Venera district in the municipality of Mascali on loose, silty lava soils at 400m-450m on the eastern side of Etna. This Etna DOC Rosso from Maria Grazia Turrisi and her husband Domenico Lombardo blends 90% Nerello Mascalese with 10% Nerello Cappuccio; after vinification, the wine spends about 20 months in French oak tonneaux and barriques and a further six months in bottle before release. Anthony Rose: Stylish vanilla oak, dark fruit aromas. Serious. Concentrated dark berry fruit on the palate. Lively acidity. Starting to soften. Susan Hulme MW: Complex, nuanced, smoky aromas of cherries, spice and herbs. Very good fruit concentration and depth of flavour. Chalky tannins. Jason Millar: Kaleidoscopic nose of red cherry, tobacco, raisins, fresh fig, basalt, vetiver and liquorice. Intense palate with balsamic, tea leaves, sweet peppercorn. Serious, profound even, with a genuinely mineral finish.
