Terre del Sommacco is an experimental 'micro-terroir' wine following five years of research with a soil specialist. It's sourced from the area surrounding Menfi, which has the highest concentration of limestone soils on the island and gives this Nero d'Avola a unique character. 'It's not a wine to please everybody,' admits consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini. It has a pretty floral nose with violets, strawberry, cherry and black hedgerow fruits and just a hint of chocolate, spice and mint. The limestone soils accentuate the acidity in the wine, which draws out sweet strawberry notes at first, followed by ripe cherry and a fresh coastal mid-palate of herbs with spice. Chocolatey black fruits on the finish lack some length for now, but this wine will come together with some more time in the bottle. Pure, fresh, vibrant and lively.
