From Loacker’s Anemone vineyard, which is exposed to the hot Sirocco wind from the southeast, this is unquestionably an intense, rich and powerful Riserva. Ageing in a combination of barriques and 700-litre tonneaux also lends oxidative wood characteristics. It leads with scents of melted chocolate, cocoa powder, tobacco and clove. The palate is hefty in weight, warming in alcohol, and wrapped up in vigorous tannins. At its core, dark cherry compote and blackcurrants infused with savoury herbs lie in wait. Let this settle for at least a couple of years to allow that substantial structure to harmonise with the fruit.
