Acquired in 1999 by Antinori, Le Mortelle is located in the Maremma. Poggio Alle Nane is named after the old duck (‘nane’) farms which used to be on the estate. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere, vinified in stainless steel then aged in French oak barriques for 16 months, it opens with deep and rich aromas of ripe blackcurrant and Mediterranean scrub, with a touch of baked currants and damp earth. Velvety and flowing, and underlined by fine-grained tannins and glimpses of oak, it has both intensity and concentration, along with herbal freshness and a chocolate and menthol finish. Still very young, give this a year or more to let the wood integrate and then enjoy for the following 15.
