Oak top notes of mocha and dill cede to petrichor, liquorice root, eucalyptus and fennel. Ample and round upfront, though a sturdy structure catches up. Bright acidity gives definition to the dense layers of blackberry and dark currants, then chalky, saline minerals surge as it draws to the close. Referencing the humpbacked shape of the vineyard from which this hails, Schiena d'Asino is Mastrojanni’s top bottling – it spends longer in wood to refine its tannins. While not labeled as a Riserva, this is released a year later than its stablemate Brunellos.
