Crafted from vines planted in the 1960s, Ormanni’s Gran Selezione sees long ageing in wood and cement to coax out lurking complexities and tame its substantial frame. Still unequivocally full-throttled, the 2021 leads with sunbaked herbs, vanilla, tobacco and a touch of tomato atop dark fruit tones. A rich mix of plump black cherry and brambly blackberries floods the palate, absorbing layers of powdery, textural tannins. Cocoa and orange flit in the background. Warming in alcohol and sternly structured, it demands an equally intense pairing of braised game meat. Just 1,500 bottles.
