Originally part of the ancient and sprawling Badia a Passignano monastery, Poggio al Sole has been owned by the Davas family – wine-growers from Switzerland – for more than three decades. For their annata, they have embraced the local Canaiolo Nero grape to assuage the emphatic structure of Sangiovese. Black pepper and forest-scented, the 2023 leans more to concentration and density than brightness and agility, well endowed with earthy red berries and accented by cedar and chestnut. Tannins are balanced if compact. Finishes a bit monolithic.
