Montefalco’s most iconic wine, first released for the estate’s 25th anniversary, 25 Anni undergoes whole-berry fermentation in French oak barrels, then spends 24 months in the same vessels. An inky colour anticipates heady aromas of blackberry preserve, plum, barrel-derived vanillin and graphite, joined by clove and rhubarb with coaxing. Mouthcoating black fruits take centre stage on the palate, fully incorporating substantial but smoothly extracted tannins. Menthol, sweet spice and chocolate echo on a long and polished – if slightly woody – finish. Give it a few years to shed some of its oaky and extractive exuberance.
