The Maculan estate in Breganze is best known for this sweet elixir made from grapes air-dried for four months before pressing. Luigi Veronelli described the Torcolato as 'dolce, ma non dolce' - sweet, but not sweet - referring to Vespaiola's intrinsically brisk acidity. Though somewhat moderated in the relatively hot 1982 vintage, it refrains from being cloying. Gorgeous panettone and crème-brûlée aromas are followed up by notes of honey, caramel, dried tropical fruit and candied orange zest on the palate. While it seems indestructible and timeless, it won't necessarily improve. Don't hesitate to open it and enjoy, perhaps with some blue cheese.
