Grown on four distinct parcels on the west-facing slopes on Bendigo, overlooking Lake Dunstan, the lower-lying parcel was harvested three weeks before the highest altitude parcel, which lies at 350m. Owner Misha Wilkinson says this site has 'more of everything', especially tannin, thus 2018 is the current release – but it still has a lot more mileage. The nose opens with subtle smokiness and almost a touch of incense. The palate is dense and immediately structured with tightly stacked tannins. This is powerful and muscular, but in a toned, tight body with dark plum and cherry fruit shining tantalisingly through that structure. This is one for the long haul, expressing Bendigo's poor, schistous soils, needing time to unfold. Having tasted far older vintages of Verismo, I can vouch that it is worth the wait.
