An initial touch of bacon-fat reduction opens to redcurrant, cherry and bramble aromas, layered with spice, wild thyme and lavender. Juicy core with chewy tannins balancing the rich, ripe fruit. A polished, assured style with good concentration, finishing with an appealing, sappy twist. Monte Christo is a relative newcomer to Central Otago, though the Kiwi-US Parris family behind it have deep roots in the area. In Alexandra, they have restored the old 1860s stone winery of pioneering Frenchman Louis Féraud – believed to be the first person to plant vines and make wine in Central Otago – as their cellar door. The estate owns five vineyards in Alexandra, Bannockburn and Pisa, with this wine blending fruit from all three sub-regions.
