Te Kano is Māori for ‘seed’ and, with a focus on regeneration, the winery has sown more than 5,000 native plants to revive mining-damaged land on its Northburn estate. Billed as the world’s most southerly Cabernet Franc, this wine – the first vintage – is inspired by Loire styles, made using whole berries and carbonic maceration with no sulphur additions in order to accentuate fruit purity, crunchy tannins and racy acidity. Christine Marsiglio MW: Graphite, blackberry and black cherry aromas. A lovely wine that’s very aromatic in a way. Have it with a roast leg of lamb? Yes, please. Freddy Bulmer: Pretty floral aromas with lavender, plum and pepper. The palate is driven by violet, lavender and liquorice, alongside punchy blackcurrant and star anise. Intense and generous. Roger Jones: Violet and damson with inky, savoury notes. Herbaceous with a silky feel and a mid-palate full of bright fruit. The finish is good with great focus. I would like to see this in a few years time.
