The first release of this wine, made from handpicked fruit sourced from specific rows in the F and G blocks of Brancott’s Terraces vineyards, where vines are about 15 years old. The grapes are gently pressed and the unracked juice goes straight into small French oak barriques, 45% new, for wild-yeast fermentation and maturation for 18 months. The finest barrels are selected for the final blend and then, like the Sauvignon Blanc, the wine is given six months of bottle age before release. It has heady, overt aromas of wild blackberries, floral notes and spice, reminiscent of a Syrah. Warm alcohol is apparent on the polished palate, backed up by generous dark bramble fruit, ripe black cherries and a savoury earthiness, plus a good dose of vanilla oak spice. Grippy, chewy tannins and fresh acidity provide structure. This Pinot is all about opulence and power rather than restraint and grace but nevertheless is very well made, perhaps needing another year to settle. Just 400 cases made.
