Smokiness and an edge of popcorn immediately set this apart. These notions blow off to reveal a beautifully green, mossy savoriness outlined by lemon. The palate is creamy, the fruit is ripe, like juicy yellow plum, but there is an absolutely mouthwatering citrus zestiness at work, partnered by a lovely, pithy texture. Together they elevate this into a complex, gastronomic wine with ageing potential. Lovely, creamy and long. The grapes, unusually for Marlborough, were hand-picked and fermented spontaneously in used barriques of which just 5% were new, putting a very different but delicious spin on Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. All the fruit is from the Alice Mills Vineyard in the Wairau Valley.
