2006 marked the first year that Escarpment bottled its single vineyard wines separately. From vines more than 20 years old, the back label of this Pinot states that it will develop for 'up to 10 years' - but at 12 years it is wonderful. It has mellowed into a savoury and silken expression with a rich bouquet reminiscent of smoky, spicy charcuterie and mushrooms, while retaining its sweet plum fruit. It's a very complete wine with supple tannins and mouthwatering acidity. I think it's time to start cellaring more Martinborough Pinot Noir for a decade or more.
