Founded in 1998 by German husband-and-wife winemakers Kai Schubert and Marion Deimling, this certified organic estate with 14.5ha under vine is renowned for its Pinot Noirs – the couple’s ‘true passion’. This Syrah, sourced from the 2-hectare Home Block in Martinborough and 12.5ha Marion’s Vineyard in the sub-region of East Taratahi, was destemmed and fermented in stainless steel before being aged in barriques, 35% new, for 33 months. Christine Marsiglio MW: Elegant black fruit aromas. Powerful on the palate with lots of black pepper and bramble, and a mineral-driven backbone. A very long finish with notes of tapenade and dried violet. Freddy Bulmer: Needs air to open up but when it does the fruit on the nose is delicious and attractive. Rounded and spicy palate, good definition and a fresh finish. Roger Jones: Bright, clean and focused, with a complex balance of perfumed acidity and fruit. Silky blueberry, damson and yellow plum flavours, and a polished finish. Carries its alcohol well.
