An initially reticent nose but one that's very layered: earth, iodine, spice and bramble/damson/black cherry fruit, plus milk chocolate notes. Quite a firm, dry palate, while still having a good juicy core of fruit. Tight, powdery tannins are decently long. Offers great value for its sophistication and depth; John Kavanaugh is a clever winemaker, consistently making thoughtful, understated and delicious wines. Te Kairanga is one of Martinborough’s earliest wineries, established in 1984. Grapes are sourced from three of its vineyards, two on the deep gravels of the Martinborough Terrace, another from a cooler, higher, more exposed site.
