The Azores Wine Co was founded by António Maçanita, Filipe Rocha and Paulo Machado in 2014 to revive forgotten indigenous varieties. This red from volcanic vineyards on windswept Pico island is a blend of varieties including Aragonês, Agronómica, Castelão, Malvarisco, Touriga Nacional, Saborinho and others. The nose is packed with juicy raspberry and blueberry fruit, with spice and a fresh mineral character. The palate is more restrained, still with good depth of blackberry, black cherry and raspberry fruit, but with a core of salty minerality and fine, elegant tannins. Finishes with spicy black fruit and a seam of salinity.
