Once widely planted in Colares, there are now only 15ha of Ramisco vineyards in Portugal. This comes from pre-phylloxera bush vines in a vineyard just 3m from the Atlantic. Hand-picked and fermented with wild yeast, it is aged for six years in old exotic vats, including Brazilian mahogany, before spending an additional two years in old French oak and a further year in bottle. Harmonious, complex aromas of berries and autumnal stone fruit, with a savoury and leathery edge. The palate is a revelation: evolved, soft savoury notes are balanced by a fresh breezy salinity and an iodine tang. I love the sense of wild rusticity to this wine. With great ageing potential, it will keep happily bottle for many years.
