The capricious and low-yielding Jampal variety is almost extinct in Portugal – just 32ha are currently planted. The grapes for this wine come from a once-abandoned vineyard about 30 minutes' drive north of Lisbon, just six kilometres from the sea, planted on granite limestone soils. With just four months in oak following a stainless steel fermentation, the wine retains its floral Viognier-like peach and musky fruit character, along with a round body, balancing citrus acidity, and lovely orange peel length. This should improve in texture and complexity with a few more years' ageing.
