The ‘pillars’ in the name represent the eight signature varieties of the Cape. This blend is based on Shiraz, with Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in support. Part of Stellenrust’s ArtiSons project, it’s crafted from wild-fermented fruit sourced from old bush vines (30 years or older), with one third whole-bunch fermented. The wine is aged for 24 months in 20% new French oak. Jason Millar: Fine and serious, with good acidity, bay leaf and terracotta. The firmly structured, tannic palate suggests this will hold and develop well. Feels unforced and harmonious. Andy Howard MW: Plenty of vibrant, forward, fleshy berry-cherry fruits. Not at all forced or overripe but has a lovely freshness and lift. Fine tannins, good length to finish with an attractive spice note. Roger Jones: A luxurious, velvety feel. Blueberries, billberries, damsons and cedar notes, evolving layered, textured hints of tobacco and cedar on the finish.
