Lismore’s Age of Grace Viognier comes from Elgin while fruit for this Reserve comes from the estate in Greyton. There’s whole-bunch fermentation and 20% new oak in a combination of small, medium and large barrels. While the Elgin version is charming and lifted, this is much more intense expression of Viognier: deep, rich apricot fruit with a drying, savoury, smoky note through the palate. It’s a big wine with plenty of structure that demands food and, ideally, a few years in bottle.
