Samantha O'Keefe is so well respected in winemaking circles that her name has made it on to the front label of this wine. 'The Long Road' is a name that alludes to the long journey the California-born winemaker and owner of Lismore Estate has been on to get to where she is today, in up-and-coming region Greyton, South Africa. The vines were replanted after a bushfire destroyed her vineyards, winery and home in 2019, and the young vines are already making wines of great character. The grapes for this Viognier were whole-bunch pressed and the wine fermented and was aged for 11 months on lees in neutral large oak barrels and foudres. It's a grape variety that is naturally fairly low in acidity and relatively high in alcohol, but this example is fresh as a daisy, an elegant, cool-climate expression with an attractive purity of juicy peachy fruit.
