Grapes from northwest-facing slopes of decomposed granite, Table Mountain sandstone and what the locals call koffieklip (‘coffee stone’, an iron-rich conglomerate). Maturation over 18 months in barriques (60% new). ‘Additional hang time this year ensured a slight reduction of the pyrazine and typical Helderberg garrigue character, contributing to beautiful black fruit characteristics,’ comments winemaker Gottfried Mocke. Concentrated, with satin tannins. Powerful yet focused. Andy Howard MW: Dark, intense, complex. A huge structure of oak, tannin and ripe fruit, cut with acidity. Impressive and powerful. Black olives and attractive new oak. Roger Jones: Tobacco, cedar, dark blue fruit, bilberries and blueberries. Refreshing depth and character. Sweet spices and minerals. Elegant mouthfeel.
