The Mackenzie family bought this Bottelary Hills farm in 1987. Since then it has embraced regenerative farming, overseen by winemaker Carl Schultz and viticulturist Wilhelm Joubert. This tribute wine comes primarily from a single vineyard planted on deep red tukulu soil with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (3% of the blend in 2017, along with 4% Cabernet Franc). It was matured for 19 months in 60% new French oak. Malu Lambert: Subtle nose of red fruit, tomato leaf, oak spice and smoke. Serious, restrained and elegant. Dark-fruited, with redcurrant freshness. Andy Howard MW: Elegant palate with all the components well judged and integrated. Subtle, with lovely fruit purity. An intellectual, rather than showy, style. Roger Jones: Complete, with gentle, precise berries and cool, clean cedar notes. Polished, but with a refined graphite, fynbos, blackberry, teak polish feel.
