The modern Kleine Zalze winery was born in 1996, although wine has been produced on this estate since 1695. Kobus Basson and his family purchased the property, improving and developing it. Most of the fruit for this wine came from their own property, with a few selected parcels from other Stellenbosch vineyards. Every block is hand-harvested and vinified separately, then aged in oak barrels of first, second and third fill over 21 months. Greg Sherwood MW: Opulent nose of boot polish, salty cassis, cherry kirsch liquor and hints of blueberry crumble. Lovely sweet fruits, tangy acids, and a sweet-sour finish. Lovely. Daniel Grigg: A metric tonne of new oak yet the juice is lapping it up and begging for more. This is refined yet proud and loud-mouthed. Stonking stuff. Roger Jones: Seductive, dark nose, vanilla and cedar. Clusters of tiny berries light this up, balanced with delicate savoury flavours and a creamy, lingering backbone underlined by soft citrus influences on the finish.
