Oldenburg has been making a name for itself with its Chardonnay, but this is the first release from its home vineyard of Rondekop (‘Round hill’). Located in the more elevated Stellenbosch ward of Banghoek Valley, the estate farms regeneratively and is a WWF Conservation Champion. The UNA V spends 10 months in 25% new oak and ferments naturally over six months. Fewer than 3,000 bottles were made by winemaker Nic van Aarde. Jason Millar: Bold, buttery, with plenty of golden fruit and a hint of honey. Rich palate with good acidity and nice length. More savoury than sweet. Opulent but with a firmly mineral streak that keeps it in check. Stylish and rich with a hint of peanut brittle to finish. Andy Howard MW: Refined, elegant nose. All the components are in very fine balance. Oak is evident but subtle. Bright acidity and mineral notes keep the palate fresh. Still needs a bit of time to reach its peak. Roger Jones: Lovely purity. Stone fruit, melon, spice, cedar, lemon thyme. Layered. Freshness on the mid-palate from tiny bubbles of citrus, freshening the textural feel. Seamless. This is destined to evolve beautifully.
