Reyneke sees his farm workers as the cornerstone of the business, so proceeds of this wine help them and families with housing, education and pensions. Serious and structured, it has graphite and minty cedar tones, the oak also lending spice and firm tannins, while the generous berry fruit has a leafy freshness and mineral tarmac edge. The blend changes each year, and in 2017 it is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Cabernet Franc and 14% Merlot. The Merlot (fermented in steel) gives bright red fruit notes, with darker cassis from the Cabernets (fermented in concrete). The final blend matures 18 months in barrel, 30% new.
