When Johannesburg businessman Toby Venter bought Uva Mira in 2014, he created this wine to complement the estate’s already-famous Chardonnays. Situated on the windy Helderberg mountain overlooking False Bay, Uva Mira has built a reputation for its structured but sophisticated red blends under fastidious winemaker Christiaan Coetzee. The OTV is a showcase for the estate’s best Cabernet Franc (60%) blended with an equally meticulous selection of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels. Jason Millar: Pure, deep nose of red berry and fresh black fruits. Youthful, but with depth. Cool, gravelly. An immaculate Cab Franc. Roger Jones: Bright and focused with refined floral and violet notes. Creamy, textured and layered, balancing freshness and savoury umami, along with hints of aged saddle leather. Victoria Mason MW: Blackcurrant pastille, hedgerow fruit and savoury oak. Quite extracted and ambitious. Savoury, Marmite-like character on the finish. Still tightly wound.
