At the top of Adi Badenhorst’s Swartland farm you’ll find South Africa’s oldest surviving block of Grenache, planted in 1952. The 12 rows of gnarly old bush vines are named Raaigras (‘after Rayas’, Badenhorst jokes) and it is bottled as a single vineyard. Undeniably pretty; perfumed with rose, white blossom, orange oil and cinnamon. The citrus character continues on the palate, softened with snow-melt tannins and a red-berried mid-palate. Badenhorst says he keeps the winemaking ‘simple’: foot-stomped grapes, with a portion of whole bunch, natural ferment and 22 days on the skins, before ageing in concrete.
