Chenin masquerading as a red wine, with its firm, muscular and savoury structure. This, thanks in part to the iron-rich soils in which the old bush vines grow, on a steep hillside at the base of the Piket-Bo-Berg. But also to Francois Haasbroek’s considered approach to élevage. Whole-bunch pressing, followed by a period of semi-oxidative settling, further burnishes the red and yellow apple fruit profile. Evolving layers of quince, ginger and melon are tempered with a whiplash mountain freshness. Ribbons of silky texture add to the appeal, the result of native yeast fermentation in old 225L and 300Ls and one 500L demi-muid. Aged for 15 months, with no fining, no filtration and minimal added sulphur.
