It was Dewaldt’s grandfather who bought a small farm in Paardeberg, with Dewaldt’s father Cecil taking over aged just 19 more than five decades ago. The first release under the Dewaldt Heyns label was a 2006 Syrah-Viognier. Though the farm was sold in late 2014, Dewaldt still sources fruit from here. For the winery’s flagship wine, the Shiraz vines are bush-trained and dry-farmed, producing only small batches. Greg Sherwood MW: Rich layers of violet perfume, potpourri, stalky sap, red bramble fruits and stony mineral. Fleshy red fruits, tangy with a chalky finish. Daniel Grigg: With alluring perfume, this is a sensual, velvety wine, with the lengthy time in oak now almost seamlessly integrated. Cool menthol atop graphite and nutmeg-infused damson jam. Roger Jones: Enticing perfume hints. Stunning texture, dark brooding fruits with hints of gravel, sweet rare baby lamb’s kidneys, fruit both chewy and pristine, layers of complexity and freshness, inky but precise.
