Emma and Jeremy Borg created Painted Wolf in 2006, aiming to raise money for the protection of the endangered African wild dog, now reduced to below 6,000 in number. For this wine, grapes were mainly sourced from Leeuwenkuil farm and a second site, Kasteelsig, with fermentation in small open bins and maturation in French and Hungarian oak for 14 months. Greg Sherwood MW: A lifted perfumed nose, tart cherry, violets, bramble berries and garrigue. Earthy and rich, packed with redcurrant, red cherry and tart wild strawberry nuances. Lovely density. Daniel Grigg: Heather on a warm spring day, singed thyme, orange peel and Maraschino cherries. Roger Jones: Cheery dark fruit with fresh vanilla, cedar and spice, berries with savoury herbaceous notes and meat juices combining well. Earthy forest floor background with some grip.
