Rijk’s Wine Estate is northeast of Cape Town and east of the Atlantic ocean, and has a Mediterranean climate. Rijk planted 14ha of vines in 1997, followed by 12ha in 1998. The Private Cellar Pinotage is gently extracted and aged in oak vats of different ages and origins. Greg Sherwood MW: An exotic nose showing hints of blood orange, bergamot and red plum. Palate is bright and super tangy. Sweet, sour plum and red berry intensity with a cool, focused finish. Roger Jones: Fresh zippy cola on first taste, then a luscious berry explosion. Some spice and twigs giving it backbone but upfront juicy fruit evolves beautifully in the glass. Victoria Mason: Roasted coffee, baked blackberries, toast and sweet spice on the lifted nose. Intensely concentrated, rich fruit. Opulent mid-palate, and satiny tannins.
