The nose delivers sweet blackberry fruit and ripe black cherry without heaviness. It’s a touch smoky, with fresh bay leaves, something faintly meaty and a textural palate framed by ripe, grainy tannins. Paarl, Bot River and Stellenbosch contribute the fruit for this wine, from old vines planted in the 1960s and 1970s on shale, granite and clay, when Cape fortified wines were still much in demand. The Bot River portion is from Sebastian Beaumont, Marelise’s old employer, who is the one responsible for her love of Tinta Barroca in the first place. There are two barrels of wine from each vineyard, and Marelise says that the numbers are always awful: low acids, high pHs, and yet the wine always seems to find its way. These days she just trusts it. There’s less of a whole bunch component here than in the Grenache, around 20%. Aged for 16 months in foudre.
