Langpad, meaning 'long road', was the first of the old-vine Colombard – often written Colombar without the 'd' – wines to be produced in South Africa, starting with the 2020 vintage. Elusive and subtle, by turns this recalls top quality Muscadet or Txakoli with its crystalline delicacy. Fresh notes of salted Granny Smith emerge from the glass, combining on the palate with a touch of green olive, oyster brine and fresh lemon juice. Crisply refreshing, cooly restrained, this promises to develop more breadth with age, but it is full of pleasure now. From a vineyard planted in 1983 on sandy soils in Vredendal, Langpad is spontaneously fermented and aged in old oak for 12 months before bottling.
