Under the ownership of Ukrainian expat Vitaly Gaiduk since 2012, Quoin Rock buys Chardonnay from coastal Agulhas and Pinot Noir from Elgin to create the base for this wine. A small amount is aged in old wooden barrels before blending. It’s then fermented in the bottle and left to age for seven years before disgorgement, with a further six months settling before release. Disgorged in March 2022, this is a classically styled brut with 8.7g/L of residual sugar to balance its cool, ocean-inflected fruit. Jason Millar: Quite developed, with bready notes and discreet orchard fruits, nice freshness. At the moment a very restrained and delicate style, but it should open out with some bottle age. David Kermode: Enticing, waxy nose, blanched almond, ripe greengage, toasted brioche. Bursting with orchard fruits, mountain honey and pithy white grapefruit, all supported by a gentle toastiness. Anne Krebiehl MW: A wonderfully savoury nose that still offers a delicious appley lift. Vivid and full-flavoured, with a beautiful Genoa sponge backdrop. So long, and ticks so many boxes.
