Daughter of a famous bullfighter, Verónica Ortega was raised in Cádiz but headed to Priorat to make wine with Alvaro Palacios. Her impressive CV also includes stints with Raúl Perez and experience outside Spain with Niepoort in the Douro, Domaine Combier in the Rhône and Burgundy's Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Settling in Bierzo, she focuses on old-vine plots, farming organically. Cobrana is 75% Mencía and a 25% mix of Palomino, Doña Blanca, Godello and others, grown side-by-side in a 90-year-old mixed vineyard at 750m. Made from whole bunches, it's aged in amphora and old French oak for 13 months. Almost Burgundy-like, it has an ethereal quality, with savoury-edged, perfumed aromatics and fine, silky tannins. Unfurling layers on the palate: delicate cherry and red berry fruit, alongside savoury balsamic notes, a mineral undertow and lovely, lingering finish.
