Having grown up in Montsant in the 1960s, Xavi Peñas and his wife Pilar Just were part of a generation for whom the countryside was a place from which it was necessary to flee. After studying economics and settling in Barcelona, the couple realised it was not thus; they left the city and embarked on a project to revive an old 46ha farm – Mas Sant Rafel – on the DO’s southeastern edge, with 11ha of vines. The white iteration of its Solpost range is a Garnacha Blanca, fermented in French oak barrels, where it remains on its lees for five months. Luis Gamiz: Green apple and lime, well-integrated oak. Elegant, saline finish. Classic cut. Andrew Johnson: Lemon peel and pith on the nose. Quite a tight, structured palate. Very grainy, with stony notes and dried lemon peel on the finish. Pierre Mansour: Ripe, honeyed notes, nutty. Expressive and forward. Super palate dances beautifully between concentration, power and vigour.
