Established as a village in 930 AD, Finca Viladellops has long been under the ownership of the Desvalls family. The estate’s winery was built in 1877 and of its 500ha, only 60ha are planted with vines. When Marcelo Desvalls took over in 1999, he changed the focus towards quality organic wines produced exclusively from Garnacha and Xarel·lo. The estate’s flagship white is produced from three plots of some of its oldest Xarel·lo vineyards, one of which is planted with its rare pink-skinned mutation Xarel·lo Vermell. The grapes ferment in 500-litre French oak barrels, where the wine then ages for seven months on its lees. Luis Gamiz: Red apple, tarte tatin, racy acid. Laser-cut style, salty and savoury. Superbly made. Andrew Johnson: Zingy and fresh on the palate. Almost sherbety. Candied fruit on the fresh finish. Pierre Mansour: Creamy and spicy. This offers stunning textural complexity. Understated yet concentrated. Shows real authenticity and sense of place.
