At 650m-700m in Porrera, the vines for Roca Roja grow in the red slate soils of the La Mallola vineyard, where the Llevant wind is always present, keeping the vines healthy. The wines are made following organic and biodynamic principles, with fermentation in concrete tanks and French wooden barrels followed by 18 months’ maturation in oak and three months in clay amphorae. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Intense and well balanced, with a distinct mineral character. Lovely red fruit and wild flowers. Supple, with refreshing acidity. Original. Christine Allen: Freshly baked fruit cake, vanilla pod, violet and notes of slate and graphite. Lovely balance on the palate, with a line of minerality. Glorious. Beth Willard: Stony, mineral, fresh fig aromas. Perfectly balanced, with black olive, black pepper and dates on the palate. Layered and complex, but somehow light on its feet.
