Barbadelo comes from trellised vineyards in the Amandi district overlooking the Sil river. It’s unoaked and caught the judges’ attention for its exceptional quality-to-value ratio. Accurately described by one London wine merchant on its website as ‘dangerously drinkable’ and ‘great for seafood when you fancy red’. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Abundantly aromatic. Piquant with redcurrants, dark plums, violets. Palate is a starburst, with vivid plums, citrus, liquorice, almost dark chocolate. Beth Willard: Wild strawberries and plum. Juicy and ripe with soft tannins, and good concentration. Very approachable, lively. David Williams: Deep, dark, intriguing nose – something of Syrah, with a wildness. There’s sinew and bristle in the tannins, but lovely flow too with spicy, fresh curranty fruit. Great, astonishing even, value.
