With vineyards teetering at 45° on the ‘sacred river banks’, this bodega is part of the ‘heroic viticulture’ network. In the historic sub-zone of Amandi, the soil is shallow, with granite and slate. The winery says its proximity to the canyons of the river Sil gives the vineyards a Mediterranean microclimate within Atlantic Galicia. The wine is young and unoaked, making it a textbook example of Mencía. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Succulent cherry, meaty aromas. Plump and floral with blackcurrant, rhubarb, brisk lemon acidity coming in, notes of liquorice and light tar. Light, defining notes of tannin. Beth Willard: A pretty nose of rose petal, potpourri and talc give way to red cherry, a hint of blackberry and wild herbs. Crunchy acidity, very much of its place, great intensity. David Williams: Nicely perfumed nose of violets and red fruits. This is juicy, full of fresh and racy acidity with some nice fine-grained tannins. Very drinkable, fresh, youthful Mencía.
