Tony Morrhall, Sherry buyer at The Wine Society, is a Jerez expert of enthusiasm and long standing. His list is one to watch for its regular special releases and interesting limited editions. Who does he select for The Society’s own label? None other than the excellent value Sanchez Romate. The Sherry list contains several of Jerez’s key producers, but Morrhall also makes fine selections from Romate. Among The Society’s mature, oxidatively aged wines, Maribel Amontillado and The Society’s Viejo Oloroso are both very good.
Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Complex, long and multi-layered. Exemplary fino. A great, classic wine.
Sarah Jane Evans MW: Fine blend of yeasty freshness with citrus elements on the nose. Palate is dry and tight; develops with a fine richness of flavour. This is a little tarry with an enticing herbal note. Iodine note on finish.
Nick Room: Very fino nose: bright clean aromas, lovely almond, citrus and apple tone. Quite complex, rich, and in the Jerez-style, with a little more alcohol on the finish.
