Jorge Piernas flagship bottling, a tribute to his grandfather Juan, is produced with fruit from a single plot (Finca del Paso Malo) planted more than 50 years ago on a north-facing limestone slope. It yields a wine with expected power offset by a broody, shadowy freshness. The tight, chalky tannins support the deep core of blackberry, cherry and bramble, covered by a thick cloak of tree bark, Assam tea leaves and dark chocolate. Petrichor and wet stone play vividly in the background. Sprinkled with cracked black pepper and cocoa nibs. A very characterful wine with potential to improve in bottle.
