One of the standout wines from the tasting. It's made from the little-known, historic Maturana Blanca variety - the oldest varietal recorded in Rioja, dating back to 1622. Winemaker Alejandro López said that this grape can suffer from volatility as well as botrytis, so has to be monitored closely in the vineyard as well as the winery. Linear, searing acidity joins citrus fruit, lemon peel, green apple, spice and a herbal quality. There's an oxidative nutty note and toastiness from the oak which enhances the wine rather than dominating it. The finish is long and clean, and exceptional with food. I would happily keep this for five years and revisit, keeping an eye out for the development of the oxidative notes. A variety to seek out and try.
