2017 was the earliest harvest in Rioja’s history to that date – and Culmen’s 10th. This deeply coloured wine is lively and approachable in aromas, offering redcurrants, violets and fine cedar. As ever, the palate is powerful, driving through with black fruits, liquorice (provided by the 11% of Graciano in the blend) and spices, then finishing with firm and savoury tannin. Can be drunk now, but even better with time. The malolactic fermentation and ageing were in the same new French oak: 26 months in all, followed by 20 months in bottle before release.
